If you have sensitive teeth, you probably find hot, cold, sweet or acidic foods and drinks harsh. Even cold water may be too difficult for you to drink or rinse your mouth. The causes could stem from many aspects but what exactly should you do about it?
Most of us are guilty of brushing too hard which can cause your enamel to be worn away. This can expose the dentine underneath the surface and lead to increased sensitivity. Consuming too many acidic drinks and foods also wears down enamel, but in reality, even your gums can naturally shrink and therefore the roots become more exposed and missing that layer of protection.
Additionally, sensitive teeth can be the result of a gum disease, a cracked tooth a filling or teeth whitening.
What can you do to help reduce the sensitivity?
- REPLACE YOUR BRUSH HEAD EVERY 2-3 MONTHS
Good news, with the Ordo plan you are already doing a lot to help to reduce the sensitivity. It’s important to replace your brush head every 2-3 months and don’t let it wear out. A worn out brush will do more harm to your teeth than good, this is due to worn bristles damaging the enamel and gums!
- DENTISTS RECOMMEND SOFT OR MEDIUM BRISTLES AND A FLUORIDE TOOTHPASTE
Our all-in-one Whitening & Sensitive toothpaste contains 14000ppm fluoride and potassium nitrate that helps with reducing sensitivity. Our DuPont bristles are designed to be gentle your gums and enamel.
- BRUSH LAST THING IN THE EVENING AND AT LEAST ONE MORE TIME DURING THE DAY
Don’t forget to brush your teeth just before you go to bed, as germs and bacteria will pull an all-nighter party in your mouth. Bet you wouldn’t like it!
- DON’T BRUSH STRAIGHT AFTER EATING IF YOU HAD ACIDIC FOOD
If you know you will be having something acidic for breakfast, it’s best to brush before or you’ll have to wait at least 30 minutes after to brush your teeth. Some foods and drinks can weaken the enamel of your teeth, so when in doubt just wait for a while and then brush away.
- BE CAREFUL WITH HOME TEETH WHITENING KITS AND OTHER PRODUCTS
No dentist would ever recommend a home whitening kit over a treatment in the practice. The Oral Health Foundation is worried that consumers are using these products without fully knowing what they contain and as a result are not getting enough of the ingredients, which actively protect their teeth. Thus, these products could increase sensitivity.
